Oral Conscious Sedation
Boca Raton Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral Conscious Sedation is a medical procedure involving administering oral sedative drugs to reduce anxiety in patients related to the procedure. Oral Conscious sedation is a popular way for millions of patients to undergo dental procedures and have their anxiety eased. By allowing the patient to enter a state of relaxation while being awake will let the patient respond to the dentist’s questions or commands. No pain will be felt.
With general anesthesia, a patient loses all sensation and consciousness. With oral sedation, the patient remains responsive to stimuli and can hear and follow verbal commands, such as. ‘open your mouth.’ If they do doze off, they can be easily awoken. All reflexes, such as breathing and coughing remain functional, however, their perception, reasoning, and comprehension may be mildly impaired.
Oral sedatives in liquid or pill form are swallowed. Valium is a common sedative. Ativan, Xanax, Vistaril, Halcion, Serax. Ambien and Sonata are also used to help reduce anxiety. Generally, a patient will take a dose the evening before their procedure and then another dose will be prescribed 30 minutes to one hour before the procedure. Oral sedatives do not require any special equipment making them easier to administer and less costly.
