Boca Raton IV Conscious

The agents (i.e. drugs) used in I.V. sedation have sedative, amnesic and euphoric properties. These are all good things as sedation has a calming effect which is most beneficial as many people present with anxiety prior to care. By providing an additional level of comfort vital signs such as hypertension (high blood pressure) are typically reduced. Lowering of blood pressure within norms is usually quite beneficial thereby reducing stress on the cardiovascular system.

The agents used in i.v. conscious sedation are typically Versed (Midazolam) , a benzodiazepine (i.e. Valium like drug); Fentanyl ( a potent narcotic) , or Demerol, a longer acting potent narcotic agent. Patients desiring additional comfort would benefit from the services of an anesthesiologist who can add Propofol, a potent very short acting anesthetic agent. Propofol is very short acting: its effects are nearly gone in four (4) minutes. That’s the beauty of the drug, it is very powerful and very, very short acting. Patients are sedated then maintained at a comfort level by a constant infusion of Propofol by an electronic unit called an infusion pump. This pump can be set to “dial in” the level of comfort that is necessary. In instances where Propofol (Diprivan) is used and anesthesiologist is always employed.

Monitoring of vital signs is continuous throughout any sedation visit. My office employs Blood Pressure monitors (NIBP), electrocardiogram (EKG), end tidal CO2 (etco2) , Pulse oximetry (SPO2), Pulsimetry, respiration monitor, temperature (when necessary) . Continuous oxygen is employed during all intravenous procedures.

Intravenous Sedation provides for more comfortable dental care when employed in the manner described above. Your safety and comfort are foremost considerations.
